With my skills and talents not being used appropriately since the accident, I have done a huge amount to recover, redone a Masters and tried to get back in to my previous field of doing research in international development, which has been a fundamental challenge. I have decided that such a way to use my skills would be more authentic would be a to use the story of what I have been through.
I have done a lot to spread my message by writing a book of my experience, but it is difficult to get around. As a way to get greater understanding of brain injuries to create a more sympathetic society to understand that someone receives every 90 seconds within the UK and not judge the homeless or people who seem drunk harshly, but to understand what their situation is. It maybe that they are the victim of a brain injury, so the message is to be more tolerant and produce a kinder society.
My story shows how determination, stubbornness and humour can get you through the worst times and create a more positive future for yourself. The difficulty is knowing where to put it and it takes time to understand which path you can go down. From writing a book about this I feel that greater awareness should be brought to the population. I have also found that I am perfectly able to stand and share my story to a large audience which is quite an important trait that which could lead me to engage me in public speaking ventures, create a group that can learn from each other and see where it goes!
